Read the following passage and answer the questions.

A middle ear infection (otitis media) usually starts when a cold  causes the eustachian tube between the ear and throat to swell and close. When the tube closes , fluid seeps into the ear and bacteria start to grow. As the boody fights the infection , pressure builds up , causing   pain. Young children get more ear infections because they get more colds , and their eustachian tubes are more easily blocked.

Symptoms of a bacterial ear in fection include earache , dizziness , ringing or fullness in the ears , hearing loos , fever , headache , and runny nose. Childrn who cannot yet talk may tug on the ear as a sign of pain .

Antibiotic treatment stops bacterial growth , relieving pressure and pain. Left untreated , the pressure can cause the eardrum to rupture. A single eardrum rupture usually does not have long – term consequences. However, repeated ruptures may cause hearing loos.

PASSAGE 1 :

Papyrus decays rapidly unless it is carefully stored, and most of it disappeared before modern scientists could examine it. We know little about most Egyptian libraries. A library existed at Gizeh in the 2500s B.C. Amenhotep III had a library at Amarna in the 1400s B.C. and Ramses II founded one at Thebes about 1250 B.C. The Temple of Horus at Edfu (now Idfu) , built in 237 B.C. , was famous for its library.

The Greeks also used papyrus. Pisistratus , a ruler of Athens, probably founded the library there in the 500s B.C. The Greeks setup libraries in all the cities they founded , from Sicily to the Black Sea. Plato and Aristotle had famous collections of papyrus scrolls. Aristotles scrolls were passed on until they becam part of the most famous library in the ancient world , at Alexandria. Alexander the Great was Aristotle s pupil , and he learned the value of books from his teacher. He built Alexandria in 332 B.C,and his successor, Ptolemy I, founded a library there soon afterward. Scholars believe the library contained more than 500,000 scrolls , representing the literature of all the known word , as far away as India. Alexandria also had the first librarians. Many of them , including the poet and bibliographer Callimachus, are still famous. Under Alexanders successors , the library at Alexandria was the glory of the Hellenistic world. PASSAGE 2 :

The Dewey Decimal Classification an outline of knowledge equipped with a numerical notation that provides shorthand symbols for the terms used in the outlines. These symbols can be used on the backs of books to indicate the shelf arrangement as well as the subject content. The classification is available in unabrideged and abridged editions . For most small libraries , and for any library which does not buy printed cards or entrust this work to a professional , the abridged edition is sufficient and convenient.

The Dewey classification allocates all Knowledge as represented by books into 10 classes , numbered zero through nine . Class 0 is used for such general types of materials as new papers and periodicals which cover many subjects and is also used for disciplines which deal with knowledge in general rather than with one specific area of knowledge. Examples of such disciplines are library science and journalism which , by nature of the professions , are concerned with all knowledge . Classes one through nine each represent a major discipline or groups of related disciplines , e.g class five is used for the pure sciences such as chemistry and physics. All 10 classes together attempt to embrace all human knowledge and intellectual endeavor as it might be represented in books.

PASSAGE 3 :

The main duties involved in cataloging and classifying books are fairly standard in any library , including such tasks as establishing entry , descriptive cataloging , classification , establishing subject beadings and cross- references. In actual practice , libraries differ greatly both in the quantity and kind of work assigned to catalogers or included as part of the total duties of the catalog department. There are , however , several general factors that will determine the cataloging procedures in any library . The library s objectives must be considered , and these will vary depending on the type of library . The prime objectives of a university library will place great emphasis on aid to researchers. In a public library , much thought must be given to readers seeking self – instruction and recreational reading . Related to this is the character of  the library s clientele. Scholars in an academic library will demand more elaborate information than will readers in a public or school library . the size of the library will affect cataloging practice , since a large collection usually demands finer degrees of bibliographic control. The budget is another very obvious factor in the quantity and quality and qualityof work produced by the department. If money is not available for sufficient staff , the cataloging cannot be elaborate. Whether or not or to what extent the library participates in a cooperative or centralized processing arrangement will be a factor. If you buy library of congress , Wilson , or library Journal cards , or if you deal with a jobber who provides books labeled and stamped and virtually ready for the shelves , obviously the duties of the department will be different from those of a department where all cataloging is original.
